This exotic botanic garden is located at Jardim Botanico in Rio de Janeiro. It was built in 1808 by King John VI. Garden was first built with an intention to acclimate various spices including pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg found in West Indies. In 1822, it was opened for public and now it is available for visitors every day except public holidays. This garden is now a historic landmark and a large number of people visit this beautiful masterpiece every year. Here are few interesting things to know about this stunning botanic garden.
1. Green Paradise

There are around 6500 species of plants and trees are located in this garden which makes it a green paradise for its visitors. There is an orchid house and a Japanese garden where you can see a variety of exotic flowers and plants. You can also see many herbal and aromatic plants in its Sensory garden.
2. Animals

A number of animals can be seen moving from one place to another which is an adorable sight to watch. There are monkeys jumping through the trees and little birds of various species singing in the garden. Bring your cameras along to capture these cute creatures.
3. Playground & Cafe

The garden has a playground built inside for the children. It has wooden toys and other stuff for children to enjoy. The playground also has benches, tables and toilets to facilitate its visitors. There is also a cafe situated in the same building for snacks and meals.

The Botanical Garden also has a bookstore and a gift shop. These are located at the visitor center inside the garden and run by the Botanical Garden Friends Association. You can buy souvenirs for your loved ones and also a variety of different postcards and books. There are many other things available to buy from shops.
5. The Central Fountain

The Central Fountain is the main highlight of the Botanical Garden. It is made in England and comprises of two basins. The four figures situated on the fountain represent poetry, art, music and science. It is one of the most stunning landmarks of this garden one should not miss to see.
6. Monuments

The Botanic Garden is full of unique monuments located inside it which remind visitors of the 16th century. Some of the magnificent monuments include the statue of Goddess Thetis and the statue of Echo and Narcissus Valentine Master. 7. Student Tours

The Botanical Garden provides environmental education service to the students. The research institute was created in 1992 with a goal to train various subjects such as environmental education, environmental management and promotion of scientific knowledge. Groups and individuals facilitate from this service and acquire extensive knowledge, skills and experience related to environmental education.
8. Thematic Tour

The Botanic Garden offers guided tours to its visitors. These tours are either on foot or can be taken on the electric car. The visitors can get detailed knowledge about the natural resources while going through various paths and trails of the garden. They can be accompanied by a guide person or can also do it themselves with the help of leaflets.
9. Royal Palms

Royal Palms are the major highlight of the garden which is loved by all the visitors. These palm trees were planted about 200 years ago and they are very tall. There are two 800 yard long rows of the enormous royal palm trees that make them very attractive sight and the favorite photographic spot for the visitors.
10. Close to Parque Lage

The biggest advantage you can get to visit Botanic Garden is its closeness to the beautiful Parque Lage. It is a beautiful mansion which was the residence of Enrique Lage and his wife. It became a public park in 1960. The park consists of lakes, beautiful garden and an artistic mansion. There is also a cafe offering delicious coffee and meal to the visitors. This mansion was also featured in the famous Snoop Dogg’s song ‘Beautiful’.
