Shibuya is known to be a fashion and shopping district to many visitors of Tokyo but if you live in Tokyo, you know that Shibuya is also one of the best places to be a foodie and enjoy some of the best Japanese restaurants which are run sometime for over 50 years or more. Those are not very fancy restaurants, instead they are very local, rarely visited by foreigners and serve the hard working Tokyo people day and night.

If you want to know how Tokyo really taste like, try one of the 15 restaurants in this article. It might be hard to find them, you might need to navigate your way through small streets and alleys but its way worth the time and effort to get there and try one of their dishes. 1. Asahizushi Sohonten Shibuya

Located just outside Shibuya Station is a small but truly special Sushi restaurant which has been running operations for over 80 years in the same spot. Asahizushi Sohonten is offering about 60 seats in a clean and very modern looking restaurant. The fish are very fresh and the chef is a true master when it comes to making your special orders. Prices are quite low in compare to the same level of Sushi you might get in Ginza or even Tsukiji. An average meal will cost about ¥2000 for lunch and ¥3000 for dinner. Enjoy this traditional place with a history that goes back to pre-world war II right next to Hachiko in Shibuya Station!

2. Hayashi

Located not too far from Shibuya Station, about 10 minutes walk up Dogenzaka Street and deep into the nightlife area of Shibuya is one of the best Ramen shops in Shibuya. Under a very simple entrance door and a wooden sign your ill find HAYASHI RAMEN with is simply a masterpiece Ramen and is a must if you are in this area. The Ramen shop is only open for 4 hours a day! So be sure to get there between 11:30am to 3:30pm and get your lucky spot of the day. The prices are reasonable, a basic Ramen cost ¥800 and if you order the extra boiled egg and Yakibuta pork slices it will come to a total of ¥1000 and it taste delicious. A perfect mix of pork an fish soup like you never tried before!

3. Tenichi Shibuya Tokyuten

Tenichi Shibuya Tokyu ten is an excellent Tempura restaurant located at the very end of Shibuya Center Gai bordering Dogenzaka and Udagawacho area. The Tench Ginza branch is known as one of the most exclusive restaurants in Tokyo and it is a place where presidents and ministers from all around the world go to eat when they come to Japan. The Shibuya branch is much more humble but don’t let that mislead you, it the same exact quality of Tempura you will find in Ginza in prices which are affordable. Tenichi Shibuya is open from 11am in the morning until 10:30pm and an average lunch cost about ¥3000. Dinner is a bit more expensive and cost about ¥7000 but it is worth the price as you get world leaders food for a quarter of the price it might really cost in Ginza!

4. Gonpachi Shibuya

Located right between Dogenzaka and Maruyamacho area is one of the finest Sushi restaurants in Shibuya – Gonpachi Shibuya! Although it is a Sushi restaurant, it feels more like an Izakaya then a Sushi restaurant. You can order so many Japanese dished beyond the Sushi and enjoy a full Japanese style meal. Although the restaurant is located in a beautiful area overlooking Shibuya, it is by no mean a fancy or expensive one. It has 200 seats inside and an average meal in the day should cost anywhere from ¥1000 to ¥2000 while at night you can expect a bit more expensive menu which ill cost around ¥10,000. I highly recommend the lunch specials in Gonpachi. Reasonable price with delicious dishes!

5. Jonathan Shibuyasakuragaoka

Located right behind the Cerulean Tower and in close proximity to Shibuya Station is the classic “Family Restaurant” called Jonathan. This restaurant is part of a chair restaurants spread all over Japan and loved by so many families and kids a like. If you have a family and look for a great place to go eat and keep the bill low, Jonathan is a great option. The menu in Jonathan is a mix of western and Japanese food and you can easily order from a massive size menu with huge pictures of each item. No need to worry about language here as the menu speaks for itself. You can also order a “drink ticket” and be allowed to drink as much as you want in the drink corner and best of all, it is open 24 hours a day!

6. Ramen Shibuhide

Located deep inside Dogenzaaka area is Ramen Shibuhide shop, a very simple but super Ramen restaurant. This tiny restaurant offers only 20 seats but it is open until 3am in week days and 6am on the weekend! The restaurant offers pork based Ramen with large generous pork meat slices and fresh bamboo shooting. The noodles are a thin type and very delicious added to the fine taste of the soup which you will surely sip to the last drop. Prices at Ramen Shibuhide are very reasonable and a basic Ramen will cost around ¥1000 both day and night. This Ramen shop is best if you want a quick meal rather then sit in for a long time, it is basically serving food for people on the rush who needs to get their stomach full quickly with delicious hot soup and keep on their daily or night walk.

7. Umegaoka sushi no Midori

Umegaoka sushi no Midori is conveniently located next to Shibuya Station right next to the TOHO cinema complex offering about 60 seats with two shifts. Morning and lunch time is from 11am to 3pm and evening time is from 5pm to 10pm. Midi Sushi is actually a large network of very low cost Sushi restaurants and it is a very popular place, so get ready to stand in line for about 30 minutes before going in no matter which time of the day it is. The reason is that although the Sushi cost is low, it is superb in taste and freshness and Tokyo people know that and use any opportunity to get into the restaurant and enjoy the excellent taste. Since the place is also located next to many hotels, it has a “take out” service in which you can order your sushi and take it to eat in your hotel room!

8. Saizeriya Udagawacho

Saizeriya Udagawacho is a Japanese “family Restaurant” located very close to Yoyogi Park and Harajuku, and right behind the Shibuya PARCO department store. Very similar to Jonathan’s – it is a very low cost restaurant catering for families and kids yet the price in Saizeriya is almost half of that in Jonathan’s and the food is as good! You can get yourself a drink ticket to allow you unlimited drinks and tea at the self served drink corner and when you order food, you have no reason to worry about the Japanese as the menu offers large size pictures of every dish and you can simply point your fingers what you want to the waiter and they will get it to you within minutes. Excellent choice for a quick and low cost meal for the whole family 22 hours a day! (Closed only from 8am to 10am)

9. Tsunahachi Shibuya Toubu Hoteruten

Tsunahachi Shibuya Toubu Hoteruten is a Tempura restaurant which is located very close to Saizeriya and right on the border between Shibuya and Harajuku at the entrance to Yoyogi Park. Tsunahachi chain stores are known in Japan to be some of the best low cost Tempura restaurants which are not fancy or too demanding and cater anyone who wishes to enjoy high quality tempura at reasonable prices. The restaurant is quite small and offers only 40 seats. It has two shifts running in the morning from 11:30am to 3pm and then open again from 5pm to 10pm at night. Average price of a meal is about ¥2000 per person and you can expect a decent meal for this price.

10. Katsu Seibu Shibuya

Katsu Seibu Shibuya is one of the best conveyor belt Sushi restaurants in Shibuya. You probably heard about it before coming to Japan, as in Japan, if you want to get sushi fast and cheaply, you simply go to one of those restaurants. You can pick your Sushi right off the moving conveyor belt or order your special order from the overhead touch screen and your screen will beep when your order will arrive. You can eat as much as you feel and when you are ready simply click “finished” on the touch screen and a waiter will come and count your dishes. Prices are quite low with an average of ¥120 per Sushi dish. You can also pick up drinks and desserts right off the belt! Since this area is a very popular tourist spot, Katsu has a special English menu for tourists which makes the whole ordering process so much easier if you never tried it before!

11. Ramen Nagi Niboshi Ou

Ramen Nagi Niboshi Ou is a classic and one of the best ramen shops for Tokyo locals which is situated off Shibuya Station at the beginning of Roppongi Dori street. This is a tiny restaurant with only 12 counter seats open all day long from 11am to 1am at night. This Ramen shop is specialised in fish taste soup and has a unique taste made of about 20 different types of Sardine fish!  If you like to experiment in Ramen types and want to try something new other then regular pork taste, this place is the right one for you as they mastered the art of fish taste Ramen and best of all, the place is not expensive whatsoever. 12. Kiraku

Kiraku Ramen restaurant is located conveniently behind the TOHO movie theater complex right off Shibuya Center Gai, about 10 minutes walk from Shibuya Station. This spot is one of the best Chinese taste ramen in Shibuya! It is a small place and offer a couple of counter seat and 4 tables catering mainly for people on the rush but make no mistake about it, this is one of the best spots in Shibuya to get Wonton ramen! This place is been in business for over 70 years and the taste is as such, a truly masterpiece of a Chinese style ramen for only ¥800 per bowl. Remember not to get to the shop too late as they close quite early around 8:30pm!

13. Tenkazushi

Just around the corner from Kiraku Ramen shop you will find Tenkazushi conveyor belt type Sushi restaurant. It is located on the other side of the TOHO cinema complex building and 10 minutes away from Shibuya Station. This restaurant is as local as you can get in Shibuya! It is simply designed without any fancy or beautiful environment but don’t let that image fool you, it is an excellent Sushi spot with very fresh and well made Sushi on a conveyor belt system. The place is open all year long from 11am to 11pm and with an average price of ¥100 per Sushi, it is hard to beat that price for this quality If you look for a quick Sushi lunch or dinner while you run around in Shibuya, this is the right place to step in and fill your stomach.

14. Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto

Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto is located as well next to both Kiraku and Tenkazushi restaurants, on the corner street of the TOHO cinema complex building. This is another excellent choice if you look for Chinese style ramen shop. It is a very small place with only about 25 seats but it has a comfortable sitting bench outside the restaurant for people who are inline waiting for their turn to go in. The Mouko Tanmen, their shop main dish cost only ¥770 yen but is a delicious Chinese noodle and soup taste Ramen you ever have. They also have Japanese style miso Ramen which is as delicious with a spicy Chinese edge to it. The place is open from 11am to 11:30pm at night and make sure to get there early as there is always a line outside the shop and an average waiting time is about 20 minutes.

15. Hakata Furyu Hyakkendana ten

Hakata Furyu Hyakkendana ten Ramen restaurant is located deep inside Dogenzaka area next to Tokyo Sound Museum Vision night club. This Ramen shop is open from 11am to 3am the next morning and is offering one of the cheapest pork based Ramen at a price of ¥500 per bowl!  The price has nothing to do with the taste, it is one of the best pork based Ramen in Shibuya and is packed all day long with people who are on the run and need to grab a quick and very low price Ramen. The place has only 1 table and about 20 counter seats which are occupied all day long, and since this area is quite busy with tourist, the restaurant has window stickers of the menu in English for tourist to check out from the street before they go in and order what they want. Lovely place for a ¥500 Ramen!
