The Koban Restaurant was chosen by the magazine Gastronomy and the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo as one of the best restaurants dedicated to Japanese cuisine in the city of São Paulo. Here are 5 things you should know about this famous Sushi restaurant.

1. About Koban

The restaurant’s name is a tribute to manekineko, the cat with a raised paw that holds a koban (golden coin of the Edo period). This figure is seen by the Japanese as a symbol of good luck, and waving to prosperity.
Running since 2005, Koban is a famous restaurant situated in Moema district of São Paulo. It is dedicated to Japanese cuisine and it’s Sushi is considered to be the best in the city.

2. The Chef

Elson da Silva was born in Jacobina, where he spent a difficult childhood. He came to São Paulo in 1981 when he was 13 years old. In 1999, he was able to open his first restaurant. Lots of enthusiasm but little experience in administration led to the establishment closed after eight months. After a lot of determination and hard work, he achieved success and today, the sushi chef owns three major Japanese food restaurants in São Paulo, including Koban – Moema and Itaim Bibi.

3. Dishes

The restaurant offers Salada Koban, Gohan, Harumaki, Missoshiru, Ikafurai, Sunomuno and Shimeji as appetizers. The main course comes with the options of various varieties of Sushi, Uramaki, Sashimi, Temaki, and Teppanyaki. Ice creams, banana flambada, Creme papaya, and Petit Gateau are available as deserts. The restaurant also serves a wide variety of alcoholic drinks.

4. Decor

The unusual decor of the Koban constitutes of the round tables the form of the legendary samurai coins – from where the restaurant derives its name. The furniture and the interior decor speaks of elegance and precision. The environment receives generous natural light thanks to large windows front.

5. Information

Other than the one at Moema, the Koban restaurant has one another unit in Granja Viana located at Av. São Camilo, 1530 Granja Viana Cotia. On weekdays, the restaurant remains closed at evening time. The seasonal dishes can be viewed on their website.
